Camera
Any 3D, 2D, or even 2.5D game or experience needs something to provide a viewpoint for the person playing it. Traditionally the Player provides a 3D first-person view, but there is another option! The Camera object can allow you to choose any view in a scene, and even to make it 2D or 2.5D.
This simple yet powerful tool allows for totally new possibilities in games and tours! Keep reading for a breakdown of how it works, and some of its abilities.
Camera Object Explained
The camera object can be added to a scene from the Special tab.
The camera's most simple explanation is that is provides a new perspective, or viewpoint, in a scene that is independent of the Player's view:
That ability opens up many possibilities including:
- 2D/2.5D scenes
- 3rd person characters
- Controllable vehicles
- Using Blocksmith for movie-making
- Showing camera feeds on video objects
- And so much more!
Camera Settings
There are several settings that can be enabled on the camera object. Here is a quick breakdown of their effects:
-
Look around: allows the Player to move the camera's view when controlling it.
-
Pointer-controls: allows the Player to interact with objects from the Camera's point of view.
-
Use for video recording: Sets the camera as the intended target for camera-based video recording.
-
Isometric camera: switches to a 2D or 2.5D (depending on the camera's rotation) view of a scene.
-
Isometric size: when Isometric Camera is enabled, then the size changes how much of a scene is encompassed by the view of the camera.

Switching the Player's View to a Camera
You can easily switch the Player's view to a camera in three quick steps.
-
Add a Camera to a scene.
-
Select the Player and click on "Select Camera" in their settings.
- Click on the Camera in the scene (or hierarchy) you want to use.
When Playing the Viewer, you will "see" from that camera's point of view now. And if you want to reset the view to the Player, just select them again and choose "Reset to Player".
Attaching the Camera's View to Video Objects
Want to attach the camera's feed to a video object instead of the Player? It's just as easy!
-
Add camera and video objects to a scene.
-
Select the Video object and choose "Camera" for its Source setting:
- Click on the Camera in the scene.
Now the video will show what the camera is viewing! It is a "live" view as well, so if the camera is animated, the video object will show everything the camera sees as it moves.
Here are some other uses for it:
